Summer 2019 Book Now!
We have closed the yurt camp a bit early this year to have some much needed family time. We would like to thank our family, friends, guests and community for supporting us through a challenging year. We look forward to seeing you next year!
5 Reasons to Book a Yurt Holiday with High Nature:
1 - We are located in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 337 square kilometres of protected landscape.
2 - We are just a few minutes walk from some of the most spectacular sandy beaches and coastal walks in England. So whether you want to walk, cycle, surf or simply relax on the beach, we are perfectly situated to meet all these needs.
3 - Our yurts are warm and cosy, beautifully hand-made, furnished and decorated to a high standard with unique textiles and furnishings. Our soild oak frame beds were built by local carpenter Don Rigby (Senior Carpenter at Carpenter Oak), and our wood burners are built by local blacksmith Martin Champion.
4 - Camping with us will also provide you with the opportunity to explore The High Nature Centre and discover and learn about natural food growing, conservation, heritage and culture. We have plenty of undercover space for you to enjoy yourself, whatever the weather!
5 - With Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth just a short ferry ride or drive away, you will find everything you need from the wonderful selection of independent businesses located in the surrounding area. Plus, just a few minutes down the road is the new Gara Rock Hotel with it's fantastic resturant, and The Pig Nose Inn, a very special public house, not to be missed!
Our beautiful small scale coastal camping site consists of 5 yurts aimed to attract people wishing to explore the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the undulating hills of the South Hams. The main camping area consists of a spacious field, with the sea located on the southern boundary. The field is divided into 4 main circular spaces so that visitors can feel enclosed within their own private glade. Wildflowers provide valuable wildlife habitat, fabulous for observing bees and butterflies. A large standing stone provides a focus in the middle of the field. On a clear evening, the sunsets and star gazing up here on the plateau are truly spectacular.
The shared facilities here at High Nature have been built to a high standard. Our yurt camp kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to self cater (cooking facilities, hot water and refridgeration, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans), so all you need to bring is your groceries! We also provide you with carefully designed compost toilets and hot showers.
Staying in our yurts means that you are just short walk from the fabulous beaches of Seacombe Sands (Gara Rock), Mill Bay and Sunny Cove, and are surrounded by some of the most picturesque views in the area. The Venus Cafe is on your side of the Estuary, and a short ferry ride across to Salcombe will give you a wonderful selection of unique, high quality shops and businesses offering clothes, food, household interiors, gifts, art galleries and leisure activities. A short cycle ride in the other direction will take you to East Prawle, where you will find The Pigs Nose Inn, a traditional pub dating back 500 years to when it was a smugglers inn and used to 'store the booty' from the various shipwrecks. East Prawle also has a fantastic little cafe and shop.
Our yurt frames are beautifully hand made by craftspeople from South Devon and East Sussex. Two of our yurt frames were made here on site by the founders of the enterprise. The frames are made from ash 'in the round', meaning each pole is beautifully unique. Our covers are made to fit perfectly by D&K Covers, based here in South Devon.
We cater for small or large groups (on special occasions), familes, couples and singles. However, we aim to keep large groups to a minimum as to respect our neighbours and other visitors. Yurt campers are free to enjoy the privacy of their own space or benefit from the additional facilities on site.
