How to Get Here

Travelling to High foot, bicycle, boat, train and road

The High Nature Centre is located between the villages of East Portlemouth and East Prawle (opposite High House Farm – Post code TQ8 8PN, OS ref SX 75911 37628). We can be reached by ferry from Salcombe, followed by a choice of three footpaths and a 1.6K road walk, or from the South West Coastal Path via a 1K road walk. We are a 20 minute drive from Kingsbridge (see map below), but we encourage our visitors to use other transport options to the private car when possible by offering discounts to the following options (please enquire about discounts when booking).

The High Nature Centre – Transport Options

(a) Walking from the East Portlemouth ferry point – Take the short uphill footpath opposite the ferry landing, then continue along the road, through the village of East Portlemouth, past the church, and on to the Centre (approx 1.6K). There is a choice of two other footpaths to the road with lesser gradients – one to the left of the ferry landing, or to the right along the beach/lane and up through the National Trust Woodland track.

(b) Walking from the South West Coastal Path – Leave the path at the Gara Rock Hotel, and take the footpath/road ahead. Turn right at the 1st T-junction and right again at the next. (approx. 1K). Alternatively you may prefer to take the woodland route from Mill Bay Beach to the Gara Rock Hotel (approx. 1.6K)

(c) Cycling – We are on the SUSTRANS National Cycle Network Route 2

(d) Train – Take the train to Totnes or Plymouth. Take Bus No X64 or 164 from Totnes or No 93 from Plymouth to Kingsbridge, then Bus No 606 to Salcombe. Take ferry to East Portlemouth, then follow the Walking route(s) above.

(e) Train & Car Hire – Take the train to Totnes or Plymouth train station and hire a car. (Although we try not to promote the use of the private car, hiring a car as a group is a sensible viable option).

Travelling by Road:

If travelling by private vehicle, please go via Ford rather than the using the tidal road via South Pool.  Directions are provided to all our guests when they book.  We advise people to use our directions from Frogmore onwards rather than using their SAT NAV which will take them up through Holset through some very steep and narrow lanes.
